The GB5 sculpture garden is located near the centuries-old Rhoon Castle. For the summer exhibition, initiators Margreet Leenders and Fleur Groenendijk selected works by five artists: Hetty Blankesteijn, Laura Grimm, José Jonkers, Hilde Onis and Pip Passchier. The works are notable for their originality and the varied use of materials.
About the artists:
Hetty Blankenstein — Intimacy, love, connection and optimism are key words in her work. Her studio is the place where she can leave the world around her and from which she can withdraw into herself and her imagination. Her previous work was mainly figurative, but in search of innovation she increasingly evolved her work towards abstract forms.
Laura Grimm — Wet-felted white, gray and black wool from Rotterdam sheep, natural dyes, willow branches and building stones are ingredients that the visual artist incorporates into her sculptures. They often refer to elements from her background in fashion and textiles. From this basis she uses techniques to make sculptures from cardboard, fabric and paper.
José Jonkers — 'Garden of Earthly Delights' is one of the striking works of this visual artist. It is inspired by the organic fountains from the triptych painting of the same name by Hieronymus Bosch and made of aluminum cement. She made another intriguing sculpture from peat stone ejected by volcanoes and a horse halter, found along the Pieterpad. The stone is decorated in such a way that it looks as if the halter has been clamped around it for years.
Hilde Onis — At GB5, the artist shows a series of ceramic sculptures surrounding trees. The sculptures are based on the phenomenon of 'Edaphoecotropism', the ability of trees to engulf, grow around or break objects they encounter as they grow. The texts on the objects attribute small fictional events to the living environment of the trees.
Pip Passchier — Hidden among the greenery are two wooden statues by Pip Passchier. Her sculptures and installations are characterized by a playful character with sports and games as a starting point, but she has recently started to broaden her practice. Instead of referring to specific activities, she takes a looser approach, translating intuitive drawings into 3D installations. She uses bright colors and shapes that subtly refer to the aesthetics of the public space itself.
