War for Breakfast

To celebrate 80 years of freedom, Neck of the Woods Artspace/Gallery, owned by artist Johannes Steendam, will present the exhibition from May 5 to June 1 War for Breakfast in and around Fort 1881 in Hoek van Holland.

The exhibition poses a powerful question: how do we consume, experience and imagine war – every day? Through contemporary art, War for Breakfast on how conflict is both visible and invisible in our daily lives, our culture and our landscape.

A unique collaboration & location

War for Breakfast takes place at a meaningful location: Fort 1881 in Hoek van Holland, with the official opening and performance at Bunker 2. In addition, artworks are presented at various bunkers and locations in the area, with which the exhibition forms a unique cultural route through the landscape of war and liberation. The exhibition ties in with other commemorative activities and collaborates with Fort 1881, Bunker 2, iCoon and Bunker Bremen. A first collaboration between the bunkers and Johannes Steendam in this area.

Highlights & Artists

The exhibition presents work by leading artists from home and abroad, including:

● David Černý (CZ) – On May 5 at 16:00 PM, he will paint an inflatable tank live at Bunker 2, a performance that refers to his iconic 1991 protest in Prague. This re-enactment was initiated by and in collaboration with Johannes Steendam.

● Piers Secunda (UK) – Historical project about forced labour on the British island of Alderney during the construction of the Atlantic Wall.

● Jeroen Jongeleen – Invisible Cities: a film that documents a cluster of about 15 bunkers, which have apparently remained untouched since the Second World War.

● Michiel Romeyn – Utah Beach: a photographic monument in which human absurdity is captured in nothingness.

● Gyz La Rivière – The objet trouvé work Greed consists of ten tourist figurines of the Statue of Liberty, arranged in increasing size like a capitalist bar graph.

● And also: Rob van der Hoeven, Kim Hospers, Harry Schumacher, Jo de Smedt, JP Paumier, Artem Loskutov, Johannes Steendam, Michaël van Craelingen and Rinke Baaima.
