Angisa Taki: If a cloth could speak

From October 17 to December 7, the exhibition will be on display at the Doelen Art Angisa Taki on display, a project by Tailors & Wearers. Five artists – Brian Coutinho, Noa Mac Donald, Lana Renfrum, Yanira Gefferie and Faisel Saro – are inspired by the angisa: a traditional Afro-Surinamese headdress that carries stories, sayings and history.

Tailors & Wearers focuses on collecting, sharing and keeping alive Afro-Surinamese fashion heritage that connects the past and the present. Angisa Taki The meaningful tradition of naming and odos (sayings) takes center stage – as a source of wisdom, identity, and imagination. Expect layered work full of symbolism, personal perspective, and collective memory – an ode to the power of culture in image and form.

The Doelen Art is made possible in part by CBK Rotterdam.
