With 'VR living in the now', artist Mihai-Radu Gui explores ways to get the public to reflect on their role and place in society. We live in a society where we hardly have time to check in with ourselves – let alone others or other situations. The artist wants to imitate a condition in which we wonder how much control we actually have over our own actions and environment. Inspired by the Southern Reach trilogy by American writer Jeff Vandermeer, Gui wants to create a multi-user VR experience with a mix of LiDAR scanning, photogrammetry and 3D modeling in which he immerses the audience in a mirror world that is somewhat recognizable, but also fundamentally alien. The aim is to allow the audience to experience the unexpected – which is inherent to life – in a controlled manner. The audience can, as it were, practice with unknown, strange and unpredictable situations and learn how to relate to them. After this experience, are you better able to ask the right questions about the situations and environments you find yourself in? The advisory committee is impressed by the idealistic motivations and convincing sketches. According to them, something new is about to happen with the help of these techniques.
