At its core, sports revolve around cooperation, but in practice this is often complicated by competitive behaviour, hypermasculinity, sexism and other forms of exclusion. According to Gabriel Fontana, these traditional rigid ways of thinking have become so entrenched in games and sports that many don't even notice them anymore. Under the name Multiform, he has been working for some time on alternatives to make sport more humane and inclusive. In 2019, leaning on Bourriaud's relational aesthetics, he already developed a literally multi-sided form of dodgeball, 'Multiform game'. He also worked with clothing and objects. Subsequently, he wrote an R&D plan to develop sports games and props using the voice. In sports, the voice is often an instrument for dominant power relations, which Fontana wants to reverse. With this he wants to question 'othering', exclusion and inclusion, and create a new involvement, to create space for free interaction.

After graduating cum laude twice, Gabriel Fontana established his practice in social design in Rotterdam. In his design studio in the Wasserij he works together with various schools, the Wijkatelier in the Afrikaanderwijk and philosophical researcher Nathan van den Heuvel. The R&D Committee felt that this plan addresses an interesting and important topic in an area that could use some institutional criticism. The artist is well informed and makes nice observations. The committee felt that the project could also have an impact outside of art – seek contact there too, she advised.

Fontana began by consulting artists who use the voice as political material. He then went on to experiment with game formats in a series of public events with the Afrikaanderwijk Cooperative and the Rotterdam Queer Sport Club, before finally developing several prop prototypes in his studio. These auditory aids, sonic costumes, and ball and floor pieces are play-activated. In addition to Rotterdam, he wanted to conduct this research in Zagreb, in collaboration with gallery Miroslav Kraljevic. There in Croatia he wanted to meet international artists working with social and relational aesthetics, to develop a week-long Critical Sport Camp. Back in Rotterdam, he presented the whole in Het Gemaal op Zuid, in collaboration with the Afrikaanderwijk Cooperative, with workshops to activate the game with the inhabitants of the Afrikaanderplein. This solo exhibition, Tournament of the Unknown - Turning towards Fluidity, will take place from October 1, 2021 to November 3, 2022.
