Ash Kilmartin has been fascinated by typography for years. For her, it is a way to bring the different disciplines within his artistic practice closer together. With 𝘝𝘰𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘛𝘦𝘹𝘵, she is developing a typeface for the first time with which she wants to investigate how typography can represent and direct the spoken voice. The idea is to design a series of letterforms that visually communicate certain properties of spoken language. The artist then applies this new typeface to her own artistic practice, for example to publish a text that is written specifically for the voice. From experiments with existing and recognizable typefaces, she creates his own 'typeface family', in which different versions of a letter tell the reader how a sentence sounds when spoken. At the end of the research period, Kilmartin will publish a sample booklet with the typeface that she has applied to his own writing.
