VTM or Viata Mea, my life, is the title of a transmedia story about a Romanian Mpath worker and her vulnerable clientele. Mpaths are role-players in an EEAS, 'empathy-as-a-service' service, where you can hire people to play a role as a family member, partner, friend or otherwise platonic occasion. This already exists in Japan, a country that is technologically at the forefront of the rest of the world. Around such a service, Laurence Henriquez wanted to tell a broader story about our time: “We live in an age of alienation, isolation and ennui, where more and more of our time is monopolized by digital platforms whose entire business model rests on our constant insecurity and alienation. The COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated the underlying problem.” EEAS acting services offer kindness and catharsis, which he would like to emulate in his artwork with video sharing or gig economy apps and transmedia storytelling techniques.
Henriquez strives to create narratives about the most important trends of our time and portray them in film. Previous topics have included smart cities, water scarcity, gender, technology and the personal life stories of people he meets worldwide. His films are screened at international film festivals and have been awarded several times. In addition to being an artist, he is a communications specialist and as such specialized in digital and social media, but this plan required additional technological knowledge that he did not yet have. His application was honored by the R&D committee, who considered it a well-written plan with major in-depth steps, from an artist with a strong, convincing and professional practice and a very personal voice.
Henriquez started by delving into all the technical requirements, in between he wrote the script. Before that, he traveled to Bucharest. In practice, the intended app technology proved unfeasible, but he did find creative contacts with which to develop the film. Super Nova is a production company specializing in LGBTQ+ and feminist themes, while Glitch.shop is an agency specializing in participatory design and mobile apps. He shot the film with them in November 2021, with Glitch.shop helping him with the visual identity, UX mechanics and a marketing campaign. He wanted to show the result in Rotterdam in the city's alternative culture scene, which attracts a young creative audience that he focuses on with his work.
