Now that Nazrina Rodjan has been working consistently as an artist for over ten years, she wishes to use this period of work to look back on the development of her practice. Can she discern recurring patterns? Which choices arose intuitively, and which can be refined? The project 'Transformation of a Diasporic Portrait Practice' offers her the time and space for research, material study, and critical reflection to formulate and strengthen her artistic frameworks more consciously. For her, portraiture is both a political and a personal means of redefining representation. By delving deeper theoretically into themes such as magical realism, decolonial thought, and global solidarity movements, Rodjan aims to give a boost to the conceptual structure of her visual language. The concrete result of this period consists of a large painting that marks a shift in her visual language. More important to Rodjan, however, is the repositioning of her practice: from intuitive to consciously constructed and experimental.
