On June 18 and 19, Anne Vera Veen presented her video installation 'Traces' during the Rotterdam Open Doek Film Festival at LantarenVenster in Rotterdam. For this presentation, she developed an installation version of material previously filmed in Nicaragua and which forms part of her ongoing research and film project 'Traces of the Temporar'. For the first time, the artist was able to show this material as a spatial experience in which visitors determined their own attention and pace. The installation brought together two video channels: nocturnal archaeological work, in which soil samples are collected in complete darkness, and scenes in which children observe the starry sky via an app and learn to navigate using technology. By placing these images side by side, Veen wanted to create space for questions about perception, knowledge, and the ways in which we give meaning to what we cannot directly see. Through the physical space and the two projections, a different way of looking emerged, in which visitors could wander between images and associations.
