In the videographic essay project The Bridge is Broken You Can Go Around, Miyoung Chang puts the geopolitics of South Korea in the foreground. She examines the role of the Japanese occupation, the modernization of the Han River, the Korean War and the Asian financial crisis (1997-98) in the construction of the 'self' within a country whose infrastructure has been permanently damaged. The project moves between analytical research on disasters that took place in South Korea in the 90s and poetic elements about the construction of a 'self' controlled by the government. Chang will also organize feedback sessions with Rotterdam-based Asian artist collective SOUPSPOON. With this project, the artist expects to develop a broader perspective on methods to continue her work practice, which mainly consists of video and stories. The extensive approach to the research and the working method full of powerful texts ensure a positive opinion from the advisory committee. Making the video will challenge and deepen her work practice.
