A few years ago, Clem Edwards became captivated by an antique hinge on the threshold of a castle. As he stood there, between inside and outside, he began to reflect on how hinges and other hardware shape our lives. What holds our walls up and our doors open? What does it mean to find oneself within or, conversely, outside of a family, a gender, a home? With 'Texture & Adornment,' he reflects on the way these objects connect us to our daily environment—how we move from public to private, and how gender and sexuality are transmitted, maintained, and reinforced in these spaces. Edwards has been conducting research into forms of metal decoration for five months, focusing on the queer potential of (household) materials found on thresholds. He attends workshops in welding and metal casting, and experiments with patination techniques for brass and bronze objects. Additionally, from his own studio, he continues his research into texture and decoration by developing sketches for the material experiments. Edwards concludes the period with an open studio where he presents his findings to the public.
