Taphonomy is a series of artworks in which Nicolas Manenti engraves a document onto a tabletop. Taphonomy is a compound of the Greek taphos (burial) and nomos (law). The source documents in this series are usually administrative in nature and express a form of coercion. For Taphonomy VI, the latest work in the series, Manenti engraved documents from the lawsuit Sony brought against him for allegedly illegally downloading a CD. The artwork is an ironic copying process that destroys the original document. It is thus a form of retaliation that nullifies Sony's claim. During an exhibition at Het Archief in Rotterdam in January 2026, both the engravings and the original documents were on display.
