Puppetry has played an important role in Lili Huston-Herterich's work for several years. For her, it is a way to bridge the gap between her practice as a visual artist and as a writer and performer. In her new project 'Taking Up Space', she explores the use of puppetry in public spaces, particularly during street protests and marches. Now that xenophobic and fascist rhetoric is becoming increasingly loud both nationally and internationally, she wonders how puppetry can be deployed as a means to amplify voices of protest in the public space. Through interviews with activists, makers, and performers, the artist brings together a multifaceted collection of methods, experiences, and visions from those who perform on the street with puppets, sculptures, or masks. The result is presented in a publication featuring anecdotal stories, practical guidelines, drawings, instructive illustrations, and poetic reflections.
