Sarah Rose Guitian Nederlof’s practice consists of collecting discarded materials as carriers of individual and institutional traces. In her new project 'stillness as movement', she focuses on abandoned clothing she encounters in public spaces. “These seemingly passive 'bodies' contrast with the accelerated and imposed rhythm of the city. I am interested in the slowing potential of these everyday materials in relation to the human body and the discourse on health.”
“How can we practice stillness in a society that normalizes constant acceleration?” Based on this question, Guitian Nederlof develops a series of performative strategies in which stillness, repetition, and minimal movement are employed as artistic instruments. Inspired by postmodern dance, which specifically emphasizes the non-spectacular and the everyday, she focuses on the tension between clothing, the body, and the ‘performative pressure’ that the hyper-nervous society exerts on our bodies. In her studio, she documents every action (via video, photo, or writing) to build a visual archive of ‘delays,’ which serves as a breeding ground for future projects.
