'Soft Logic' is a series of experiments by Studio Dewi Mac Donald in which she breaks open, investigates, and reshapes existing machines and computer systems. “Our daily lives are increasingly determined by technological systems that we barely understand anymore, let alone can open, modify, or question. I want to make that black box visible. I do this by playing with the 'original language' of machines. By breaking open everyday objects and making translations between human and machine language. What assumptions are hidden in the systems we use every day? Who designed them, and for whom? And what might alternative systems look like? Systems that are not necessarily binary, not necessarily efficient, but perhaps more human?” 'Soft Logic' consists of smaller and larger experiments in which Mac Donald works with materials such as wood, metal, textiles, and electronics. To this end, she seeks collaboration with makerspaces and art institutions in Rotterdam and beyond. The experiments culminate in a presentation and form the basis for further applications to residencies and funds.
