History and fiction collide in Psychic Island by Babak & Nasrin Afrassiabi Sefid Dasthi & Tabatabai. This project consists of a film that will be shot on Telegraph Island, an uninhabited island in the north of Oman. The story is set against the backdrop of the island's history, when it became a strategic telegraph post from 1865, able to speed up and secure communications within the colonial British Empire. The telegraph station was only in operation for three years due to complex technical problems and also the extreme heat, which made life unbearable for the staff. In the movie Psychic Island, the architectural ruins form the background of a fictional story in which the new inhabitants of a deserted island perceive all kinds of disturbing sounds through glass cylinders that spring from the surface of the island. The film also plays on remnants of outdated technologies, with which Babak & Nasrin Afrassiabi Sefid Dasthi & Tabatabai want to address the geopolitics of the landscape. The advisory committee is impressed by the absurdist connections that the artists manage to make within an interesting and layered story.
