With the project On the maintenance of a growing image, Sol Archer investigates the construction of nature as a practice of spectacle-making from the colonial period. Archer argues that this practice should be treated as a cultural object rather than representation, given our responsibility for the non-human world. Archer started the project in early 2022, when he documented in Brazil the maintenance of the landscape gardens that the landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx has created since the XNUMXs. Marx's modernist view of nature reflects the "tropicalization" of the European landscape tradition and the production of a Latin modernist approach to landscape. With this project, Archer wants to continue the documentation of the maintenance of this kind of natural spectacle in European botanical gardens. He also talks to museums that own works by artists whose paintings served as promotional material for colonial expansion, such as Frans Post and Albert Eckhout, and later painters who played a role in the creation of a modernist vision of the rainforest, such as Henri Rousseau. Although the advisory committee finds the process difficult to fathom, it sees this conceptually strongly substantiated research as a nice addition to Archer's stylistic practice.
