Gerben Agterberg is currently conducting research for his experimental stop-motion animation film 'Mitty', which is set in a typical Dutch polder landscape. The eponymous, imaginative, introverted girl is bullied and projects her longing for friendship onto a coot she seeks out daily by the river. The landscape comes to life in Mitty's eyes when she experiences fear: it distorts and falls apart in the film's climax. With his directorial vision and camera plan, Agterberg attempts to push the boundaries of stop-motion film: he wants to make the landscape animable and employ handheld camera operation. Over the past few years, Agterberg has worked intermittently on visual experiments and the development of the character Mitty. In this new phase, he deepens this research into motorizing the landscape and handheld camera operation. This allows him to focus on animating the characters during a shot, while the environment and the camera move along automatically. Because everything is captured in a single frame, a pure form of animation is created with minimal post-production.
