With 'Mamotica: narratives of Bitter Taste' Sarojini Lewis connects the emotions of Indo-Caribbean women with local, bitter vegetables. In the nineteenth century they tried to escape exploitation in the then British India via transatlantic sea routes, after which they mainly ended up in Suriname. In later years many of their descendants moved to Curaçao, to find work there after a broken marriage. Lewis wonders how this 'bitter' history and the associated memories are connected to the bitter Caribbean vegetables. She plans to visit Indo-Caribbean and Creole women on Curaçao and to further develop the project under their guidance. Together with them she wants to recall memories of migration and local vegetables, which she then brings to life with video and photography. The intense green color and the shape of the vegetable will play a central role in this, as an intimate reflection of the body, skin and voice of the woman.
