During one of his off-road running trips through inhospitable terrain, Jeroen Jongeleen came across a cluster of twelve underground bunkers from the Second World War. For the Invisible Cities 2024 project, he plans to paint a number of murals on the walls, so that adventurous visitors can view the buildings from a contemporary perspective. The idea is to use the bunkers, close together as if they were a small village, as a stage for a series of contemporary symbolic reflections on the city, as the artist experiences it. The location is difficult to access and also vulnerable, which is why Jongeleen wants to make the paintings visible to a large audience by incorporating interpretations into a film, a publication and an exhibition. The advisory committee is positive about the way in which Jongeleen produces poetry and imagination from his running activities and the way in which he pushes boundaries.
