Last September, Marika Vandekraats organized a workshop in Varia Zone with the theme 'fly tying'. In this technique, different materials are tied to a fishing hook to create a lure that imitates an insect. At the beginning of the workshop, the artist asked the participants questions about their relationship with fish and their preference for types of water. A lake, a ditch or a sea? Is it deep? Is there a current? Is it used by ships or people? With these reflections, she initiated a conversation about how these elements influence the life of the fish. The group then investigated what might attract a fish's attention, after which collages were made of fish hooks with feathers, plastic, pencil crayons, tinsel and beads. From all the designs, the participants selected one, which Vandekraats then made on a real hook while explaining the process in detail.
