'remember so am / memento ergo sum' by Maarten Janssen is a study into the formative factors that have ensured that he makes what he makes over the years. Janssen's painting appears to be created by chance, for example by the way dice dipped in paint roll over a canvas. His work is therefore in dialogue with Art Concret and fundamental painting, in which the combination of properties of paint, canvas and application are examined. However, Janssen realizes that there is also a choice behind a choice. Janssen wants to investigate the factors that led to his artistic choices, whether it concerns the family he grew up in or his urge for expression. He wants to capture this 'what', a product of time and place, in illustrations. These are then placed in a database: a system of 54 cards, the number of a complete deck of cards. Janssen's plan is to screen print those cards and use them as source material for two medium-sized paintings. The advisory committee recognizes the importance of such research: it gives the artist the opportunity to reflect, while also leaving room for experiment and development.
