The medieval 'jardin d'amour' forms the starting point for Stefano Dealessandri's project 'Gardens of Flirtation'. These enclosed pleasure gardens were laid out to stimulate the senses through the form, color, and scent of special trees, shrubs, and plants. They offered young adults a safe space to experiment with love and intimacy. Dealessandri draws a parallel between the pleasure gardens and the parks and wooded areas used as cruising spots today: in both environments, walking routes and behavior are determined by the structure and density of the vegetation present. According to the artist, these green spaces are not inherently emancipatory or egalitarian, but dependent on attention and ambiguity—themes that regularly recur in his work. 'Gardens of Flirtation' allows him to delve into botany and medieval iconography through visual, botanical, and archival research. The project also offers him the opportunity to expand his practice with new techniques, such as scent and beeswax.
