With 'Fly-Tying in Trying Times' Marika Vandekraats investigates the craft of fly fishing in the context of overfishing and polluted oceans. Fly fishing involves attaching artificial insects to a hook to attract fish. Synthetic and animal materials are used that naturally mimic insects to attract the attention of a fish. The artist sees this form of communication between different materials and animals as an 'act of hybridity'. For this project she develops new hooks based on her research into the ecological consequences of fly fishing, including global warming and ocean depletion. The research will take place in the Netherlands and the Lithuanian village of Nida, where fishing takes place on a small scale. Vandekraats will eventually weave the thoughts, stories and archival finds that result from this research into a narrative text form in which her proposals for new fishing hooks are also presented.
