'Escape is Constant and Never Complete' by Dalal Mitwally is inspired by the spectacular escape of six Palestinian men from the high-security Gilboa prison in northern Israel. In September 2021, a photo appeared online of a man crouching next to a hole in the ground, the end of the 'tunnel of freedom'. For Mitwally, this image symbolizes the collective power of 'fugitivity', the active escape from, or subversive engagement with, institutional oppression. With this new project, Mitwally aims to use this method as a basis to construct a visual world through a series of paintings and drawings. “This exploration approaches fugitivity from a social, historical, and cultural perspective in which 'other' bodies are situated in spaces of refusal. Can you imagine an alternative world outside of that denial, and what does freedom mean within it? What kind of future could you imagine, what characters can be found there? And how can this act of imagination help us participate in a greater act of emancipation?”
