For some time now, Derrick Crichlow has been working on the development of a barber chair for his project 'Donning a Fa(ça)de' in which people from diverse communities feel at home. According to the artist, Black barbershops in the Netherlands impose a limited view of masculinity on their customers. The 'fade' often plays a significant role in this: a sharply cut hairstyle combined with a stubble beard. According to Crichlow, this results in these “demands for Black masculinity being deeply etched into the diasporic community, causing the fade to transform into a fa(ça)de.” With the design of a new barber chair, the artist aims to challenge the definition of 'masculinity'. Crichlow: “Queerness is already part of the space, but is not yet acknowledged in the context.” In collaboration with queer people of color and a Rotterdam barber, he is exploring how this new chair can provide space for cutting a fade and serve as a 'conversation starter'.
