With 'Do ut des', Augustina Lavickaitė aims to bring about a turning point in her practice. Whereas she previously worked primarily with displaying objects, she is now experimenting with producing them. To this end, she brings together two themes that have long served as a source of inspiration for her work: the sea goddess Nehalennia and the significant role that the 'battle' against water plays in Dutch identity. In doing so, Lavickaitė primarily investigates the influence of institutions, religions, objects, and the landscape on this national narrative regarding the 'mastery of nature'. Nehalennia, the sea goddess traditionally regarded as the patroness of travelers and sailors, offers a historical perspective, while flood defenses such as the Delta Works form a contemporary, technological counterpart. The research takes place mainly on location, in museums, and at flood defense systems, the results of which Lavickaitė translates into ceramic prototypes for vases and tiles. Simultaneously, she publishes a dossier documenting the sources, site visits, and ceramic experiments she has conducted.
