With the exhibition 'Deconstruction of Heavy Industry', Libia Castro and Ólafur Ólafsson spotlighted the catastrophic rise and fall of United Silicon. This factory in Helguvík, Iceland, was once destined to become the world's largest silicon factory. After only ten months of operation, the factory was closed by the Icelandic Environment Agency for environmental and health reasons thanks to a citizen's initiative by local residents. Yet the future of the factory remains undecided to this day. The exhibition took place from February 24 to April 28, 2024 at the Reykjanes Art Museum and was designed as an experimental location for research. In this space the community was brought together and mobilized to contribute to the transformation in the social and ecological process.
