From April 19 to May 25, 2025, Pictura hosted the exhibition "The Beauty of Our Country," featuring contributions from artists Luuk Wilmering, Otto Snoek, and Ronald Cornelissen. The exhibition explored how the human need for connection can take grotesque and violent forms in our time. Ronald Cornelissen exhibited drawings from the "Animal Farm" series. The drawings depict a rooster and a pig wandering past a series of farms in the twelve provinces of the Netherlands. Each of the farms in these drawings is based on photographs from the archives of the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands, whose mission, as they say, is to give the future a past and the past a future. Cultural heritage tells us where we come from and gives us something to hold on to, according to the Agency. However, this sense of security seems to be hard to come by in the Netherlands in recent years, and this is being cleverly exploited by ideologues of certain political persuasions. With this series of drawings, Cornelissen sheds light on the dark side of the ludicrously cultivated myths surrounding the countryside.
