Due to the massive growth of data centers, the demand for clean drinking water has also increased sharply – after all, all these AI systems need to be cooled. To address this problem, groundbreaking research is being conducted worldwide into the 'tropicalization' of these data centers, as they were not designed to withstand high temperatures and humidity. With 'Dancing with the Tropical Data Center,' Hsiang-Yun Huang investigates the impact of data centers on the environment and the climate. In doing so, she follows the colonial routes and geopolitical forces intertwined with technological infrastructures. Her research method encompasses digital anthropology and fieldwork in data centers in the Netherlands and in tropical regions such as Singapore and Taiwan. She brings together the results of this into a performance on climate-adaptive data centers in the tropics, which simultaneously offers insight into the damage data centers inflict on our living environment.
