The semi-autobiographical film Daddy is the next step in filmmaker Flo Meijer's oeuvre. For the first time, she is working on an autonomous project that can be shown in both the art and mainstream film circuits. Central to the film is the relationship between Meijer and her father, whom she has not spoken to in twenty years. Using key moments from her memories, she unravels the roots of this relationship. Her father is played by dozens of actors whom she constructs from archive footage, thus portraying that, for the past twenty years, her father has been primarily a fantasy of what a father he could have been. With this addition of this layer, she also aims to offer a broader perspective: Meijer is not the only child without contact with her father. The film thus offers a critical look at the relationship between men and women, in which raising children is still largely seen as the responsibility of women.
