For Teun de Graaf, 'Cutting it Together' is the next step in his research into music in general, and the DIY attitude in particular. He has previously published punk fanzines, built his own instruments and researched Rotterdam folk music. According to him, it is now time to make a record cutter, which he sees as part of his ideal music universe in which music emerges from communities and is self-published. De Graaf plans to make a prototype of a record cutter, a kind of reversed record player that cuts a groove in a record. He will use it to produce a series of artists' editions in collaboration with various groups. An open-source building instruction will also be available, so that more people can use it. With this project, De Graaf wants to put his artistry at the service of the communities of which he is a part. He is interested in more than just being able to cut records; it is mainly about the democratization of technology: about being able to make the means of production you need yourself.
