Artistry is an area of work that is constantly changing, due to external influences and internal considerations. How events influence is a question that Maurice Meewisse has been asking himself since calling himself a performance artist. “My interest is then specifically what role human actions play in this - what kind of influence does that have on the environment - what could be my role in it - and what are the consequences of my actions?” With this question, he wanted to apply for the post-master of a.pass in Brussels, a setting where the production of a work of art is not the most important, but where he can gain theoretical knowledge and do research in a group of international artists. This research will be the starting point for his projects during his year at a.pass and will provide the framework for projects outside a.pass.
In 2003 Meewisse graduated from the Willem de Kooning Academy, a year later he obtained his master's degree at the Post St.Joost. In those years he made large wooden installations in art spaces and at cultural festivals, with which he used his body as a tool through physical labor. It was work that also directed the bodies and gazes of visitors. In the tens his practice shifted to performance, combined with spatial interventions, process and object coincide. He wanted to investigate this connection between location, process, history and how something is created. The will to strengthen his oeuvre with this theoretical deepening formed a plan to which the R&D committee enthusiastically agreed.
In 2018, Meewisse started at a.pass where he adapted his research question. Gradually he noticed that his position as an artist in the work was more important and that he had to play a greater role in it, so a study into context in a broader sense arose. He translated this into interventions with objects and spectators who became participants in them. For example, he worked towards performances that dealt with the division of roles between himself and others, which meant a great deal of depth, “because a.pass is basically a training in critical thinking. This has helped me to better understand the discourse surrounding my work, which hopefully will make my work more focused and sharper.”
