Cartographies of Captivity: From the Dutch East Indies to Manchuria is based on the secret sketchbook created around 1944-45 by Dutch Major General HJD de Fremery. He was imprisoned in the Zhengjiatun POW camp in Manchuria, the home province of artist Yuxuan Cui. Fremery's drawings offer a compelling glimpse into the living conditions of these high-ranking prisoners of war, who came from countries such as the United States, Great Britain, and the Netherlands. He also traces their forced transfers, which took him along routes through Singapore, Taiwan, the Philippines, Mukden (Shenyang), and Zhengjiatun. In this way, these drawings unintentionally constitute an alternative "map of captivity" that transcends imperial borders. Cui is particularly fascinated by the disruption revealed by this sketchbook: a Dutch colonial official, stripped of his power, leaving behind evidence of war and captivity on the land of Cui's family history. By retracing these routes and reconnecting the archival images with contemporary landscapes, Cui explores how the legacy of war lives on and resonates in the present.
