In the Beyond the Average project, Geert Mul asks how the experience of location and time relates to current data-driven digital media. Film and photography arose from the need to capture specific moments in specific places. Artificial intelligence, on the other hand, is used to generate endless amounts of images that are anything but location and time specific. With this research, Mul focuses on developing an alternative design and a creative working method with AI software. During field work he photographs nature, after which he uses those hundreds of photos to train his AI model. In addition, the project consists of developing new software that allows him to use AI for a creative and personal way of working, so that he can generate new images with his own photos. According to the advisory committee, the application is convincing due to the exciting use of AI with its own power supply. The project is also a logical, new step for the artist and therefore fits in well with his practice.
