As a visual artist with a background in graphic and information design, Jennifer Carniel is interested in the friction between perception and representation in landscapes across different timescales. Her new project, 'As Close As It Gets,' aims to unravel the authority of visual infrastructures by creating a critical space in which direct and indirect perception is deconstructed. In her quest for Mars on Earth, Mount Etna—a place where scientific and mythological imaginings of the planet intersect—becomes the backdrop for observations in which the body is applied as a technology for perception. By combining feminist science and technology studies, field research, and interviews with experts in photography, sound design, and science, Carniel seeks to challenge dominant 'visual regimes' and emphasize the layered, material, unstable, and political nature of information.
