Valentina Vella has spent the last few years researching how infrastructure projects such as flood defences and digital means of payment embody a form of separation based on fear. Using Zen, fieldwork and comic-poetic interventions, she investigates whether there can be more relational, caring, mutually dependent ways of living. In her previous work, Rotterdam and the Delta Works formed the backdrop. Now Vella is expanding to Venice, Rome, New Orleans and Chicago, where she maps how both large-scale and small-scale forms of infrastructure reflect our cultural dealings with uncertainty, fear and emotional ties. This research forms the basis for two new performances and a modular film consisting of documentary fragments, poetic texts and site-specific interventions. In addition, Vella uses influences from new works for the novel she is currently working on.
