Find out more about CBK Rotterdam's financial arrangements during Here's how you do it #6 On Wednesday, September 23 at TENT Rotterdam, Alaa Abu Asad & Ulufer Çelik, Nikki Vroom, Stellata Koppe, and Ratri Notosudirdjo talk about their projects, which were realized in part thanks to the Praktijkbijdrage, I&V, and CBK Rotterdam x Fonds Kwadraat schemes, and how they utilized these schemes. Jeroen Graus and Charlotte Schleiffert share their experiences with the mentorship program.

How did the project go, is the result as expected, and what would they do differently next time? This evening, the artists will share their insights and engage in a conversation with moderator Nicole Sciarone and the audience. The discussions will address the differences between the schemes and clarify for what purpose and when to use each scheme. You will also gain a better understanding of what the mentorship entails: an accessible request from the mentee, the free choice of a mentor, and four joint hours to be filled in freely.

Ratri Notosudirdjo received an interest-free loan from CBK Rotterdam x Fonds Kwadraat for The Wayang Mimpi Series (Shadow Puppets of Dreams). Notosudirdjo used a surrealist performance approach to collect and archive seven stories of resistance and preservation. These stories come from Indonesian and Moluccan diaspora communities and contemporary voices. The research consists of interviews and archival research in libraries and institutions. The collected stories were subsequently artistically translated into shadow puppet performances, utilizing imaginative lighting elements, diverse materials, and folkloric storytelling traditions.

Nikki Vroom received a Practical Training Grant for her work Cuckoo Clock-CuntThe artist depicts himself naked, seated with legs spread. Between the legs, where the genitals would normally be visible, a cuckoo clock is placed in this sculpture. The clock is shaped like a small wooden house. Every hour, the clock strikes. Then a small white bird emerges from the little door on the balcony, and chirping can be heard. The smooth, high-gloss white finish of the body emphasizes the unnatural and artificial appearance of the sculpture, in contrast to the recognizable and homely character of the wooden cuckoo clock.

Stellata Koppe received an I&V grant for her project Layered ComplexityWith this, Koope has further developed her weaving practice by delving into multi-layer weaving. This technique is rarely applied in combination with complex patterns, with which she works extensively in her existing practice. In addition to this technical deepening, Koope also hoped to find ways to weave personal feelings and events into the layers in a more narrative way, and to create connections between those layers just as they are present within herself. Her findings are documented online so that other weavers and interested parties can follow her process.
