On Tuesday, May 28, cycle along with On that bike #5, an afternoon for Rotterdam artists along artist initiatives in the city. Together with Ewald X Ross we take a “look behind the scenes” of various initiatives to find out more about how they work and discuss (possible) similarities with our own art practice. Exchange is central: visitors and the initiatives can ask each other questions.
The bike tour passes three initiatives, lasts approximately three hours and ends with a drink at one of the locations. The tour is not only informative, but also a great opportunity for networking. During the fifth edition on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, we will visit various initiatives in Rotterdam-Cool and West: DE RUIT, Pauluskerk Rotterdam and PrintRoom Rotterdam. What are the motivations, challenges and starting points for artists in these initiatives? Find out this afternoon.
THE WINDOW
We start in the shadow of the tallest residential tower in our country, at a special and accessible initiative at the Gedempte Zalmhaven: DE RUIT (formerly HET PLAFOND). An 'art showcase', a 'viewing box for art': a glass facade of over 15 m2, belonging to the apartment of Guus Vreeburg and Willem Besselink. Six times a year, artists from home and abroad are invited to present their work on or just behind the window. DE RUIT focuses on passers-by, is visible 24/7 from the sidewalk, and each presentation is festively opened and explained in detail during the 'Evening with the artist'. In addition to the organizer, we also meet artist Anuli Croon and delve into the process and effect of a presentation place that has been enriching the neighborhood for more than a quarter of a century.
Paul's Church, Rotterdam
Our second stop takes us to the Pauluskerk Rotterdam. This provides a safety net for the most vulnerable people in the city. They 'help where there is no other helper' and are therefore an emergency solution for many people. We meet Thamar Kemperman, Art & Culture program coordinator, who tells us how the Pauluskerk Rotterdam uses social actions and Art & Culture activities for its visitors to strengthen the vital force and increase visibility. Through the imagination of artists, Thamar wants to talk to us about how stigmas can be broken.
PrintRoom
The last stop takes us to West, where an artistic neighborhood has emerged around and near Reinhoutplein with galleries such as Frank Taal, Contour, Atelier Herenplaats and Joey Ramone, Leeszaal West and OMI Rotterdam. In the side street we visit PrintRoom, a space dedicated to artists' publications. Karin de Jong, director of PrintRoom, explains how PrintRoom, as a spider in the web, connects daily with international networks and local communities by creating and publishing artist publications, building and sharing a unique archive. There is also a 'Publisher in Residence' program and various events are organised. For PrintRoom, artist publishing equals collaboration: every publication project is at the same time a joint process. PrintRoom also runs a workshop space with various facilities including riso printers for do-it-yourself printing, ranging from collectively designed publications and small flipbooks to posters, banners and zines.

* 'On that bike' is a translation of the Rotterdam Expression 'Op die Fiets', which means as much as a way of doing things. Literally, “on that bicycle”, modeled after that manner (“in that manner, that way”), where mode (“manner, way”) is replaced with bicycle (“bicycle”). The phrase originates from Rotterdam, but has since spread. Source: Wikipedia
