During the fifth edition of CBK Rotterdam x Off Screen, Tuesday 29 April in WORM, a selection of films will be shown that were made possible with a contribution from CBK Rotterdam. There is new work by Miyoung Chang, Alexandra Roozen, Helen Anna Flanagan and Jan Adriaans, among others.
The filmmakers will be present and will be interviewed by Petra Laaper (CBK Rotterdam) and Luca Tichelman (Off Screen). All films are subtitled, the interviews are in English.
The Large Blue, Jan Adriaans, 2024, 15 min, (2024)
Adriaans' diptych is based on the book Undercover: The True Story of Britain's Secret Police. A police officer goes undercover and assumes a new identity. In the 1960s, British undercover agents infiltrated activist circles. Romantic relationships were seen as necessary. Mimicry, also a form of imitation and infiltration, is a well-known phenomenon in the animal world.
The Bridge is Broken, Miyoung Chang, 2024, 10 min (excerpt)
The Bridge is Broken is a cinematic essay that does not attempt to explain, analyze, or simply mourn the 'tragedies' caused by the breadth of human failure. It focuses primarily on fragments of the insignificant within the aftershocks of personal dramas.
Swamps & Ponds, Helen Flanagan, 2018 17 min
Swamps & Ponds is loosely based on the speculative origins of a community of farmers known as the Toxicophagi, who built up resistance to arsenic by regularly consuming it. The film explores the impact that substances and 'invisible' toxic forces have on an environment and those who live there.
The Next Machine, Marieke van der Lippe, 2025, 12 min
Based on George Perec's 1967 radio play in which a speech computer analyses a poem by Goethe, experimental research was conducted into how this radio play can be given a contemporary translation in an auditory and visual collaboration with today's AI.
Seen by Hand, Alexandra Roozen, 2019, 8 min
The film, made by Evelyn Jansen, shows the working methods and experiments from Roozen's drawing work in which she examines unconventional drawing tools for possibilities and limitations. Central to this are the movement and the resulting trace, as well as the control and chance in the working process. The sound of the cadence of hatching, or the tension between the soft touch and hard scratches of pencil on paper plays an important role.
