Come to the start of Friday May 9th Duotones: A series of artists talking – a new program of artist talks organized by A Tale of A Tub and Studio Art Offic and hosted by TENT. The series is an attempt to bring different generations of Rotterdam artists together, and to kick it off we invited Toon Fibbe and Han Hoogerbrugge to dissect their approach to working with digital technologies and different media – from animatronics to mask making to illustration and animation – as a means to investigate identity construction and value production, both on and off screen.
Over the next six months, on a monthly basis, two artists from different generations will be paired together, (casually) presenting their work while a third artist moderates a conversation. Most of the time, we get to know each other’s work as a final product, presented to the public in the form of a thoroughly thought-out outcome. Therefore, in addition to connecting the different communities of the Rotterdam art scene – such as long-time residents and newcomers who have recently settled in the city – the aim is also to participate in the work process during its development, for example by holding preliminary conversations in public.
Drinks and snacks will be provided and the hope is that the series will become a social meeting place for many of us.
SHOW FIBBE (1987) is a visual artist who researches the development of the financial sector and its effects on the formation and visibility of identity. Fibbe attempts to expose the entanglement between the creation of financial credit, the formation of the social person and the development of literary character.
HAN HOOGERBRUGGE (1963) is a Dutch artist known for his groundbreaking work in digital and interactive art. He started his career as a painter and illustrator, but in the 90s he discovered a new medium in the internet, with which he further developed his unique style. His work is characterized by a mix of dry humor, surreal images and a critical view of modern society.
ANTYE GUENTHER, representing Varia, is a visual artist and artist-researcher who is intensively engaged in exploring non-digital research methods to challenge powerful digital systems. She is currently focused on collaboratively investigating software visualizations of biometric data, looking at what hierarchies, norms and ideologies are built into the underlying 3D imaging practices. VARIA is a space for developing collective approaches to everyday technology. As a members-led initiative, Varia maintains and facilitates a collective infrastructure from which they generate questions, opinions, adaptations, help and action
