Practical Contribution

Purpose

The Practical Contribution provides for (part of) artists' fees for art projects that have a public character and through which artists strengthen their professional practice. With the Practical Contribution, Art Office contributes to the remuneration of visual artists resulting from our commitment to the Fair Practice Code.

Note:

There must be at least four weeks between the date of your application and the start date of your project. Unfortunately, we cannot process applications submitted less than that.

For whom:

This grant is for Rotterdam-based artists. Applications can only be made by artists who:

• are registered with Art Office;
• have login credentials to artoffice.info;
• have an up-to-date artist page.

For what

Applications can be submitted for local, regional and (inter)national projects with a public character that are significant for the professional practice of the artist. This may include presentations in non-commercial spaces, in public spaces and other manifestations. Projects in collaboration with one or more parties are preferred.

Maximum contribution

€2.000. The contribution is intended as a fee for the artist. The amount of the fee depends on the nature of the project to be carried out and will be assessed in this context. If multiple artists participate in the same project, each artist submits an individual application for their own fee. We request a precise justification of the hours spent on which the fee is based. Please note: in most cases, the Practice Contribution provides part of the full fee.

Are you participating in an exhibition at a location that does not provide artist fees? Then use this calculation tool to calculate the fee. The outcome of this tool serves as the basis for your application. No exhibition? Provide insight into how the fee is calculated in another way, for example by providing an overview of hours or a detailed explanation of your time investment.

Procedure

Applications can be submitted on a continuous basis, with the exception of a summer period to be announced later, and as long as the budget lasts.

In the artist account on Art Office you can submit a request via the request form. After sending the form you will receive a confirmation of receipt by email. Make sure that both the request and the attachments are complete, including an updated, recent artist page, a clear budget and coverage plan and a justification of the fee. The artist page must be updated with an uploaded profile photo and a current portfolio. Without this information the page cannot be found on the website. Incomplete requests cannot be processed.

The applications will be assessed by one or more external advisors. They will assess the applications based on the following criteria:

• Artistic-content quality;
• Public outreach and impact of the project;
• Time investment of the artist (in a clear budget and coverage plan);
• Feasibility;
• Updated artist page on artoffice.info.

We aim to process all applications within 4 weeks of the application date. Depending on the number of applications received at the same time, processing will take longer or shorter. If it takes longer than four weeks, the applicant will be notified.

Report

The applicant must submit a report to Art Office within two weeks of completing the project. The requirements of the report will be given along with the award.

Important!

• It is not possible to submit an Artistic Practice (Praktijkbijdrage) application if you have a Grant for I&V application pending, and vice versa. I&V application running and vice versa.
• A maximum of one application per calendar year per person will be granted. There is no limit to the number of applications an artist can submit per year in the event of a rejected application. You may only submit a new application for the same project provided that the application contains relevant and significant new information.
• The start date of your project must be at least four weeks after the date of your application.
• There is no appeals procedure.
• It is not possible to submit an Artistic Practice (Praktijkbijdrage) application if you have a Grant for I&V application pending, and vice versa. I&V application running and vice versa.
• The regulations for the Practical Contributions state that no application can be submitted for activities at Rotterdam locations that have their own budget for artists' fees. This specifically concerns organisations* that receive a BKV budget during the 2025-2028 Cultural Plan period that is intended for Rotterdam artists' fees. *Organisations that receive BKV: BRUTUS, Extra Extra, ALL CAPS, MAMA, Kunstinstituut Melly, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Roodkapje, V2_Lab for the Unstable Media, Villa Zebra, Buitenplaats Brienenoord, OMI, Stichting Wijkcollectie and WORM.
