Theo Rooden

textile , process , Analytical , Abstract

Visual artist Theo Rooden (Sittard, 1969) makes fabrics. He likes to experiment with techniques and geometric abstract compositions. Based on a number of self-imposed rules, he searches for exciting rhythms and patterns. In addition, the possibilities and limitations of the loom and the quality and colors of the yarns he selects form an inspiring challenge. Rooden prefers to work in series to investigate the consequences of the elaborations of algorithms and variants thereof in detail. Rooden: 'The 'translation' of my design into a weaving pattern is like a game where the rules of the game. – imposed by myself – can collide with the possibilities and limitations of the loom. If the fabric requires it, I adjust the rules so that there is room for something unexpected that can lead to a more exciting or beautiful result. Intuitive choices in the field of color, color shades and composition play an important role in this.'

Gridscapes (2024
Gridscapes (2024) - A collection of handwoven damask wall hangings with the grid as the main theme. In 14 variations, different aspects of grid and depth are explored.
collection Tiny
collectie Tiny (2023 - nu) - A growing series of miniature weavings. 14x14cm, a game with coloured threads on the square millimetre. Each variant with its own optical effect.
collection Squares & Crosses
collectie Squares & Crosses (2023) - A collection of ten handwoven damask wall hangings. Zooming in and out. The crosses and squares form twins, they are related in terms of weaving technique. In the original presentation, the squares were presented in a church, offering space for contemplation and reflection. The crosses found their place in a gallery, in the spotlight.
Collectie Echo (2023) - A series of hand-woven damask fabrics in which flatness and depth are explored. This is done by playing with color within a certain pattern, from monochrome to multi-colored. The first works refer strongly to Escher. With each subsequent work, it echoes, becoming more and more distant.
A Gauzy Gaze (2023) - An installation for De Ruit - Formerly the Ceiling. A layered fabric that plays with perception. A work of art that does not impose itself, but disguises itself as net curtains and reveals itself in a measured manner in the busy city environment. The installation seduces with color, sliding patterns and moiré in movement. With changing transparency with more or less light from inside or outside.
Collectie Parade (2022) - A collection of fourteen hand-woven damask fabrics. Using the vocabulary of horizontals and vertical lines of the standard loom, the possibilities of the diagonal are explored. With lots of color.
Collectie Trom Pui (2021) - A growing collection of rugs. A grid is always the starting point. Geometric shapes in a second color show this grid by suggesting relief. The precise design is determined in consultation with the client.
Collectie Shadow of a Doubt (2021) - A collection of sixteen hand-woven linen double weaves for the wall in which the flat surface is challenged. This is done through rhythm in composition, color choices with illusory shadow areas and through the double weaving technique used.
