'Art is a way for me to make contact with the world around me'
I hear the thumping of a class above me and I smell Fatma's exotic neighborhood kitchen downstairs. Through the large window I literally look into my own neighborhood from two floors up. My studio is located in the Wijkpaleis, a collective building in the middle of the Middelland district. It is a community center, workplace for artists and entrepreneurs and an alternative place for the primary school around the corner. I create my art in this lively and diverse environment.
My work can be called classical figurative, but also borders on Art Brut. It is about the world around us, the colorful society. Sometimes I make an animal portrait or a flower. I look for poetry in the things I make, I associate and thus arrive at meaning. Things that strike me on the street or on the internet I combine in my head with photos and pictures of works of art. I look at works from art history, especially by Manet and Marisol. Recently I also use the community to realize work together.

Carrot from the Binnenweg
Peentje van de Binnenweg 2025 "Peentje van de Binnenweg" refers to an old Rotterdam folk tune/song: "Woman, give me a carrot." It likely dates back to the time of the Second World War in Rotterdam, when people cultivated vegetables on vacant plots of land following the bombing. The "Binnenweg" refers to the Nieuwe or Oude Binnenweg in Rotterdam. The well-known refrain goes something like this: "Woman, give me a carrot I don't know where you live I already live on the Binnenweg Carrots grow there along the road." It is a project by Ana Glisic and Ondine de Kroon about the history of the carrot, which has its roots in Ancient Persia. Seven tablecloths were embroidered by local residents in the vicinity of the Nieuwe Binnenweg based on designs by Ondine de Kroon.
