Olphaert den Otter's paintings seem to stand outside of time. They contain unreal elements that seem to come from a distant future, but also a detail and painting technique that feels traditional again. This timelessness is a conscious choice by Den Otter: “As far as possible I try to do things that can hardly be dated. I do that, or I want to, because art has become too much in the grip of trends. Things are getting shorter en vogue, only to be out of fashion for a very long time.” With charcoal, pencil, tempera or a combination of techniques, he creates works that radiate an indefinable, monumental grandeur.
