Nazrina Rodjan is a Surinamese-Dutch visual artist. Born and raised in Rotterdam, she studied at the St. Joost School of Art & Design. Rodjan works primarily with graphite, acrylic, and oil paint. Her work explores themes of migration, queerness, and diaspora, with a focus on portraiture: portraits of people of color, ancestral photographs, and colonial postcards. She is committed to visually representing marginalized and invisible stories through traditional painting and drawing techniques.
Her work revolves around making visible stories that often remain untold. Through portraits and illustrations, she gives these experiences a voice. She combines traditional techniques like painting and drawing with digital methods. A key aspect of her work is creating images that normalize queerness, with a particular focus on communities outside the dominant Western perspective. Her own background as a queer Hindustani woman is a central thread in her work, where personal histories are interwoven with collective memories. Her art is not only a reflection on the past but also an invitation to dream together about an inclusive future.
