My work focuses primarily on everyday processes of meaning-making and value-determination. At its basis lies a habit of collecting material, auditory and linguistic phenomena in my immediate environment. By editing and reframing these fragments, I arrive at spatial, graphic, textual and auditory works that each in their own way seek a subtle poetry of attention. Inspired by George Perec's notions of the infra-ordinary, I focus on the space in which things are overlooked: because the everyday is characterized by its repeated presence, it is questioned too little. My research often starts from a concrete environment and questions the cultural and psychological nuances of its underlying attention regime.

A polar bear in a snowstorm
A polar bear in a snowstorm - A series of spatial interventions as part of a summer residency in Rib, including: a pétanque court that doubled as a performance stage; a commissioned Ikebana flower arrangement that wilted for two weeks in a purpose-built display window. Arrangement by Tini Van De Wetering; a presentation of Nature had its time, a publication by Lukas de Ryck and Nikolaas Verstraete, reflecting on the plants in Chapter 8 of Joris-Karl Huysmans' A rebours, also viewed through the window, held in place by Murano glass paper weights; an essay written as a personal reflection on five years of professional involvement with the art space, performed at the finissage. Pictured: the pétanque court; above: Valerio Conti; in the background: Nadine Ghandour and Gweni Llwyd.

potentials
Potentials - A sculpture made for the opening of the Sportschool, an art space on the Boergoensevliet in Charlois. As the name suggests, the space was built and used as a gymnasium over the years. The heavy metal punching ball rack and the red basketball hoop are part of the original sports infrastructure, devices that use gravity to store kinetic energy in the muscles as chemical energy. These objects have been removed from the wall, placed on their side, weighted down with white sandbags and decorated with red and white magnets.

"Soms," - A studio exhibition with Ash Kilmartin. "Sometimes" took as its starting point a story by Toon Tellegen in which a grasshopper pays "a fortune" for a speck of dust in the bumblebee's shop. Seeing in this fabled short story a nuanced analogy for the value of art, the artists worked with the materials and forms of the studio itself, introducing other found materials to produce small moments of visual narrative. Pictured: installation view with ceiling panels.

Illustrious Alliterations
Illustrious Alliterations - Illustrious Alliterations is a collection of poems written by exploring the many possible meanings of familiar and unfamiliar abbreviations. Maintaining the steady pace of three-letter sequences, each poem is infused with its own imagination and modality of speech. The drawings in the book are inspired by typewriter art, but explore what this practice might mean in an age of digitized typography. The title is an allusion to the well-known computer program in which the poems were created. Edition of 150 published by RAMSDAM BOOKS.

A-B
A-B - A cassette with two sound works, both recorded and edited in Charlois, Rotterdam. The A-side, 'Walk', is best listened to outdoors. It is a guided walk in the form of a narrated essay on how we observe the world and ourselves while walking. The B-side, 'Sticks and Bells', is a pastoral play choreographed for an ensemble of 12 cowbells and 12 walking sticks. The story tells of a conflict between a group of walkers and a herd of cows. The riso-printed libretto of this instrumental piece was published as a booklet with the tape.
Moving in, out, around sound
Moving in, out, around sound - An installation of sculptural sound works. For the month leading up to the exhibition, I lived in the exhibition space and apartment usually occupied by Available & The Rat director Niloufar Nematollahi and previously occupied by Available & The Rat director Lili Huston-Herterich. Intrigued by the sounds created in and around the domestic sphere, I created temporary assemblages of auditory and visual elements that remind us of the warm yet noisy and sometimes hostile spaces we remember as “home.” Each work consisted of my own household objects paired with speakers playing a multichannel soundtrack: familiar field recordings of my own and my neighbors’ apartments, the bass of cars passing by the window, and a voice reminiscing about domestic memories in which sound plays a prominent role.

Short Pieces That Move!

Date:
In association with: Ash Kilmartin, Annabelle Binnerts, Kate Briggs

In 2022, SPTM! was initiated as a publishing collective focused on accessibility of publishing (cheap, anti-gatekeeping, anti-prestige) and that processes of editing, design, printing and publishing all offer opportunities to learn from each other. The collective works closely with both new and experienced writers and organizes regular workshops as part of an ongoing open research. They publish about 8 pamphlets per year.

Het Moordenaartje

Date:
Location: Rib
In association with: Niloufar Nematollahi, Maziar Afrassiabi

For half a year I edited and designed Het Moordenaartje. This neighborhood newspaper was published by Rib and distributed in Charlois, a strongly gentrifying neighborhood with rather heterogeneous communities. The newspaper collected a multitude of local voices and events—not to unite them, but to reintroduce them as an artistic collage in the streets. The name of the newspaper is derived from a steam tram that once made the neighborhood unsafe.

Oratory Services

Date:
Location: Rib
In association with: Tisa Neža Herlec, Bergur Anderson, Ash Kilmartin and Emmeli Person

A series of performances that I organized in the public space around Rib. The OS introduced new sounds into the neighborhood, which merged with the already existing noise, such as the banging of illegal fireworks or the creaking of renovations. The participating artists played with the social phonetics of everyday expressions, echoing each other and being open to the inevitable feedback of the neighborhood. The performances remained unannounced and were documented in video.
