Laurien Dumbar

Laurien Dumbar is an abstract painter who works with photography. With a camera, she explores the edges of painting, exploring "the illusion of space" in relation to "the painter's gesture." In her studio, she searches for cluttered painterly situations that arise within a backdrop of everyday materials. By painting on plastic, paper, or cardboard and then moving, shifting, or simply dropping it, she attempts, in brief, coincidental moments of painterly meaning, to make the painterly space tangible. The large digital prints she commissions from these photographs are matte and intensely colored. The skin is real and tangible, yet it is also an image. A space in between.
Dumbar wonders what abstract painting can be in the reality we live in, with screens between us and reality, in which the digital mindset has made our view double.
