Katja Verheul

socio-social , environment , international , Documentary , Audiovisual , Artistic research

I am a filmmaker and artistic archaeologist based in Rotterdam (NL). I graduated with a BFA in Audio-Visual Arts from Gerrit Rietveld Academie (NL) in 2012 and an MFA in Fine Arts from Goldsmiths University (UK) in 2016.

I believe in the revealing value of long-term research. The deep dive into complex matter is an important part of my work process. With my films I want to make complex (invisible) social, political and economical issues visible. My work often arises from the question; what remains after a war and what is the impact of these remains on people and nature?

I am working as an artistic archaeologist digging through our most recent history. Before it is nostalgic, before it is a story that lies generations before us. Not only to demystify, but to make the mediated and almost historicized and perhaps forgotten reality personal again.

I was a resident at the Jan van Eyck Academy (2018-2019), Visio - European Program on Artists Moving Images (2018), Film Forward (2020-2021) and Rotterdam Writers' Rooms (2024). I have shown my films at IFFR, Visions du Réel, Eye Filmmuseum, Kasseler Dokfest, Dokufest, Ji.hlava IDFF, LeGuessWho?, Sharjah Art Foundation, Nederlands Film Festival, Art Rotterdam, MAXXI Museum and on Dutch television, among others.

Mine Land
Mine Land (in development) - Synopsis Mine Land is an immersive VR installation that confronts audiences with the invisible legacy of war through the dangerous work of mine clearance in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In a peaceful looking forest, former enemies now work side by side as deminers, clearing deadly remnants from a war that ended thirty years ago. The Experience Audiences step into a recreated minefield: barrier tapes, scattered leaves, and authentic tools. Equipped with a VR headset, bulletproof vest, and haptic feedback, users kneel beside deminers and trained dogs, performing real clearance steps, sweeping with metal detectors, probing the soil, and facing the tense moment of discovery. Storytelling Layered narratives reveal deminers' personal histories, including former soldiers now dismantling the very mines they once laid. When a mine is found, the visuals shift into stark black-and-white flashbacks, exposing the past hidden beneath the soil. Even decades after conflicts, landmines still claim lives. With new wars producing fresh minefields, and recent withdrawals from global mine-ban treaties, Mine Land asks: when is a war really over? Unknown Grounds
Unknown Grounds (2024) - In a remote, ever-shifting island landscape haunted by echoes of forgotten wars, human traces intertwine with the earth. The island's acoustic ecology serves as a bridge between these worlds, bringing to life the whispers of bygone eras. As time reflects upon the terrain, artifacts of the past emerge. Amidst the tumult of the changing terrain, new species appear, as scientific exploration faces a new battle. RESEARCH In February 2024, I had the opportunity to participate in a residency on Örö island, a former military fortress and current military radar station. The fort's history dates back to the 1910s when Tsarist Russia began building a chain of fortifications on both sides of the Gulf of Finland to protect the capital city of St. Petersburg from sea attacks. Throughout the years it became an important Finnish military fortress. Since 2014, the island has been accessible to the public. Today, the island still bears traces of its military past, and a unique landscape has developed where new species have found ways to flourish. During my stay, I filmed and recorded day and night, resulting in an experimental film that focuses on the island's past, present, and future. A documentary-like voice introduces the various inhabitants of the island. Cesi, the sound designer, experimented with ASMR, capturing both the silence and the overwhelming noise that the island presented. The island's appearance could change completely multiple times throughout the day. By filming under the ground, up close, on the ferry and from the air - using a drone, I aimed to create a comprehensive portrait of this unique place. The result is a short film showcasing this fascinating island with its intriguing past and potentially equally interesting future. CREDITS Director, Camera, Sound, Editor: Katja Verheul Drone Operator: Daan van Gool Sound Design: Cesi Denise Nolten Voice-over: 11elevenlabs Color Correction: Marco De Stefanis Edit advice: Diana Toucedo With the support of the Öres residency program Mondriaan Fonds and Amarte Fonds.
TRUST (2022) - 2022/ 4K/ 16:9/ stereo sound/ 22.34 min. / Dutch with English subtitles (EN) A group of young girls dive into the complex hidden world of tax evasion by big foreign companies in the Netherlands. What happens behind the closed doors of these big anonymous office buildings in the suburbs of Amsterdam? RESEARCH During my artist residency at Broedplaats WOW, I found myself drawn to the large office buildings around Sloterdijk. During the COVID lockdown, I started exploring the neighborhood differently. Were these buildings empty due to the lockdown, or was there something else happening? By conducting extensive research and interviewing lawyers, journalists, and bankers, I got a glimpse into the secretive and intricate world of tax evasion in the Netherlands. Alongside a group of local young people, we delved into these complex tax evasion paths and produced a short film on the subject.
