I make work about what it takes to keep things going. A deep sea barnacle that has to feed itself with metals and gas, an unpredictable work landscape, an improvised dinner out of the kitchen cabinets. I'm drawn to these forms of labour, that accumulate rather than ever resolving. What holds them together is not function but desire: the urge to invent even when invention fails, the pleasure of tinkering without a plan. It's a way of imagining another work mode, one that resists macho displays of competence and instead makes room for mess, play, and fragile continuity.

At the core of my work is fake inventing. In my studio, I work like a boy tinkering in a garage, where the inventions never quite succeed. They take on a fantastic kind of working, like deep-sea vents bubbling with strange lifeforms, or machines in a sci-fi comic, it all operates by its own logic. The method is inefficient, wasteful, and often ridiculous, but it brings me a boyish kind of joy. The sculptures come out lopsided, full of extra pieces, and a sense that labor could be desire-driven, playful, non-macho. They echo not efficiency but fragile persistence, the small improvisations that keep things going.

Beyond the studio, I carry this method into collaborations, collective projects, and teaching.

This wasteland hangar has formed a backdrop for me to invent, or rather pretend-invent, following where boyish joy leads. What happens when I render all this fantasy machinery out of material stuff? This involves creating a large archive of detailed machine parts from a hoard of materials, without fully knowing how these pieces will come together. The good stuff happens when we messily but delicately join these pieces, constantly shifting between seeing them as machinery, material, or the last moment of operationality, desperate to be convincing. Now, we must protect such boyish joy in tackling environmental, industrial, and labor challenges. Photo Credit: Roel Backaert

Many of my designs recycle urine, turning waste into something useful for lobsters—a wild starting point for my work. Things That Wish Us The Worst (2022) - In this project I dive deeper into how we interact with economies of desire. Why, for instance, is my neigbour lending me his time, how can I be charming as a good host, why do I cry when I get back to a place I have oh so missed. Situations like these disarm us in our daily lives. I want to further understand how our desires move us through these situations. I do this in this extended collaborative project, with sculpture, video and installations. In this latest project look specifically at unmet desires, and how we project them onto objects and sometimes even lash out on them. Set in my own garden, with the architectural "foley" as the stage, I become the grumpy gardener. This role has little appeal yet might be an unexpected source of comfort in a time of unreasonable expectations, plans falling through and demands of endless "fun".
