I make work about what it takes to keep things going. A deep sea barnacle that has to feed itself with metals and gas, an unpredictable work landscape, an improvised dinner out of the kitchen cabinets. I'm drawn to these forms of labour, that accumulate rather than ever resolving. What holds them together is not function but desire: the urge to invent even when invention fails, the pleasure of tinkering without a plan. It's a way of imagining another work mode, one that resists macho displays of competence and instead makes room for mess, play, and fragile continuity.
At the core of my work is fake inventing. In my studio, I work like a boy tinkering in a garage, where the inventions never quite succeed. They take on a fantastic kind of working, like deep-sea vents bubbling with strange lifeforms, or machines in a sci-fi comic, it all operates by its own logic. The method is inefficient, wasteful, and often ridiculous, but it brings me a boyish kind of joy. The sculptures come out lopsided, full of extra pieces, and a sense that labor could be desire-driven, playful, non-macho. They echo not efficiency but fragile persistence, the small improvisations that keep things going.
Beyond the studio, I carry this method into collaborations, collective projects, and teaching.
DE ARCADE
From June 7 to 14, the third edition of DE ARCADE took place, a residency organized by FLUJAS in an abandoned monastery. Eleven professional makers from across the Netherlands worked together for a week on new work, with encounter, experimentation, and exchange at the center. The unique location served as the starting point for various performances, installations, and collaborations. The residency concluded with a public presentation day.

GB5
In the summer of 2026, Jakob van Klinken participated in the group exhibition of GB5. The exhibition presented sculptures, installations, and spatial works by various artists, spread throughout the garden of GB5. The works engaged with the surroundings and together formed a route through the site. The exhibition opened on May 10, 2026, and attracted more than 100 visitors during the opening.
Amarte Wonderland
Amarte Wonderland is an evening centered on art and makers, organized by the Amarte Foundation. Since 2019, more than 2.500 artists have been able to develop their practice with the support of Amarte. The projects that emerged from this have contributed to a broad and diverse cultural field.

BADAFF Art Fair
BADAFF 2026 (Ghent) took place in the industrial halls of Het Arsenaal in Gentbrugge and presented a selection of contemporary sculptures, installations, and objects at the intersection of art and design. The fair brought together various makers and galleries and showcased work within a spatial, industrial context that helped shape the presentation.
Sallies 4 Group Show
MOLLUSCS is a sticker project in which works are placed in the public space of Leiden. The exhibition explores the relationship between art, public space, and the specific character of the sticker medium. Participating works respond to the environment of Leiden and can be presented as individual works or as series. The stickers are produced in various standard sizes and distributed throughout the city.

When the first telescopes were used, people suddenly thought they were discovering unknown life forms and other dimensions. Only later did it turn out to be nothing more than dust on the glass, a small distortion capable of suggesting an entire world.

At the end of each Apprentice/Master season, we nominate four groups for the Jan Naaijkens Prize. For Season Highlights, they will create a new exhibition, this time without their Master. During the Season Highlights opening on August 28th, an independent jury will present the Jan Naaijkens Prize to the winning group.
De Belofte 20
Flambéed Cherries marks the festive conclusion of De Belofte #20, Kunstliefde's annual program showcasing new work by nine promising recent graduates. What began with an open call in January has evolved into an intensive and inspiring program at Kunstliefde. The young artists develop new work, meet each other, and share their ideas. The icing on the cake: the group exhibition Flambéed Cherries.

Symposium Kunst in de Openbare Ruimte - 25 Jaar Wilheminaring Jubileum
Led by Jasper van der Graaf, director of ACEC, professionals and artists, divided into three panels, discussed art in public spaces: the role of the intermediary between client and artist, the function of art in public spaces, and the technical and administrative requirements for artists. The artists called for a focus on creating space for experimentation.

Teachers Astrid Korporaal and Jasper Coppes will introduce each book and how it came to be made, and our writers will read from their contributions. The evening will be co-hosted by Janice McNab, Head of the MA Artistic Research.

Master/Apprentice Program 2025
In the Apprentice/Master program, recent art graduates are paired in groups with established artists from the art world. Participants meet regularly to share knowledge and experiences, visiting each other's studios, for example. This allows them to become acquainted with each other and each other's work. Together, they work towards a group exhibition at Kunstpodium T or one of our guest venues.

Past to Present: Five Years of Ruis
We organized performance evenings, short film screenings, book presentations, but above all, exhibitions. For this, the walls of RUIS were given dozens of fresh coats of white paint after artists had painted them with their most beautiful artworks. Like the stunning murals by Simone Albers, charcoal patterns by Nina van de Ven, or the blue airbrushed clouds by Koos de Vries on our ceiling.
Springboard Art Fair
On Thursday, June 8th, Gunay Uslu, State Secretary for Culture, opened the Springboard Art Fair. This one-off, experimental fair will take place in the magnificent Werkspoorkathedraal in Utrecht. A wonderful initiative for artists who graduated during the coronavirus pandemic. Over 100 artists will have the opportunity to present and sell their work at this fantastic venue.

Fruits De MáR
In collaboration with the Royal Academy of Art (KABK), Nest (The Hague) presents an exhibition with the work of 1st and 2nd-year students of the Master Artistic Research.
Fruits De MAR presents their work throughout the spaces of Nest. The students were guided during the process through studio visits and lectures by guest curators. With their self-chosen title Fruits de MAR, they refer to the abundant banquet of materials, objects, influences and ideas that lead to and form their exhibition.

Signs Of How We'll Slowly Have to Leave

From September 18 to October 4, 2021, the Scarabee Foundation will present the exhibition REWIND_FORWARD at H29, De Hes, Arnhems Buiten, featuring projects that explore new forms of commemoration during the Airborne March. Bart Eysink Smeets's 23 TABLES playfully explores questions about discrimination and group formation, while Derk Müller and Jakob van Klinken's RECONSTRUCTION project invites visitors to stack ruinous fragments into a new city, reflecting on reconstruction and current events.

From June 12 to 27, 2021, De Balie will host the #artistsupportpledge exhibition, featuring work by one hundred artists working in the Netherlands. This initiative supports artists during the coronavirus pandemic by offering their work for sale (maximum €200 per piece) and making it visible. The exhibition is organized by TINKEBELL., De Balie, and This Works Club and features both new and previously presented work.
De Staat van Verzorging (The State of Care)
The State of Care is a research project by five artists exploring the role of urban green spaces in The Hague. They focus on the gap between policy and practice: who decides on greening, who maintains it, and which promises are kept? The project, which grew out of a previous collaboration on The Blue Waves, demonstrates how green spaces reflect societal themes such as integration, hierarchy, and livability.
This Art Truck
This weekend, the This Art Truck will be touring Amsterdam, showcasing artworks by fifteen artists who participated in the canceled This Art Fair. The 8,5-meter-long truck will display and sell paintings, photography, sculptures, and embroidery, with prices starting at €120. The truck will stop at the Kromhouthal, NDSM Wharf, and Houthaven, among other locations, and will offer a platform for both emerging talent and established artists.
